Tune-ups

Tune-ups in the 21st Century
One of the biggest changes in today's automotive industry is the perception of a "tune-up." The classic “tune-up” was historically associated with the routine replacement of key ignition system parts, such as: spark plugs and ignition points, along with some basic adjustments to help "tune" the engine. Ignition points were done away with in the ‘70s, along with the carburetor in the middle '80s. This eliminated the need for the replacement and adjustment of a growing number of ignition and fuel system parts.

Today’s highly sophisticated ignition and fuel systems are now the norm. Things that were once handled mechanically are now controlled electronically through the widespread use of onboard computer technology.

When should a “Tune-up” be performed?
Taking into account longer service intervals and reduced maintenance requirements of today's vehicles, a “tune-up” is generally necessary every 30,000 miles or once every two to three years. This is altered when a drivability or emission problem arises that requires diagnosis and repair.

What is a Typical “Tune-up”
So, if we don’t really “tune” your car up anymore, what do we (the auto industry) mean when using the term “tune-up”? Depending on your vehicle’s configuration, an A1 Auto Service “Tune-up” typically consists of: replacing spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, distributor rotor, PCV valve, fuel filter, and air filter. Of course, not all vehicles have or require all of those components to be replaced. We also add a carbon/fuel cleaner (to clean fuel injectors), clean the throttle body, set specifications, and road test the vehicle. An oil change is NOT included in a “Tune-up”.

What do you gain from a "Tune-up"?
A more dependable car
• Increase engine performance/fuel economy (depending on driving habits)
• Less chance of a costly breakdown
• A car worth more at trade-in or re-sale
• A safer car for you and your family
• An intact warranty
