One of the most important and overlooked fluids is brake fluid. Brake fluid is not a petroleum-based product (it’s made from cashew shells) and therefore absorbs moisture from the air, when this happens the brake fluid’s effectiveness diminishes and lowers braking performance. Sludge can also build up over time blocking valves inside ABS units, and can also cause caliper and wheel cylinders to leak. Many of today’s automobile manufacturers have begun recommending brake fluid replacement at regular intervals (every two to three years)
Transmission fluid also needs to be changed on a regular basis, to avoid very expensive transmission repairs or replacement. Most transmission failures can be directly attributed to lack of maintenance, replacing transmission fluid and filter (if equipped).
Additionally, with a major service, all drive belts, and hoses are inspected, as well as the vehicle’s charging system (battery, alternator, and starter). Tire pressure is checked and set, and all hinges and grease fittings are lubricated. All fluids, that were not replaced, are topped.
Also, with any major service your vehicle will be given a road test prior to the service and then again, at the completion of the service.
And lastly, a major service (and minor services for that matter) does include an oil change.
